Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this really free? Will it always be free? What's the catch?

A: The basic SafeJot.com service as you see it here today will always be free. There are plans in the works for future premium accounts which will allow folders and access from PDA's and cellphones. However, online note encryption and decryption will always remain free. As for a catch - there is no catch. This is a valuable service and we feel everyone should have free use of it.

Q: Why do I have to encode my memos with a key?

A: You do not HAVE to encode your memos with a key. You can simply save them in plain text to the system. The encoding is done to prevent others from reading your notes (including us).

Q: How do I know that you can't read my key?

A: All encoding and decoding is done browser-side using JavaScript. No coding is done on the server and we do not see your decoded memos nor your key. To prove this to yourself, open up a memo in your browser and then disconnect your computer from the internet (pull out the ethernet cable). All encoding and decoding still works.

Q: Help. Encoding does not work.

A: Because all encoding and decoding is done browser side, it uses JavaScript. Make sure that JavaScript is enabled in your browser (it should be by default). If you still have problems, send us the details via our contact form.

Q: Is your encoding really secure?

A: Yes. Even the most skilled hacker will have a tough time decoding a memo if he doesn't have the key. You have the option of using any key you like, and you can use a different key for each memo.

Q: Why don't I see a secure certificate on the site?

A: Since all encoding and decoding is done in the browser and all memos are sent to the server already encoded, there is no need for a secure certificate.
